Vaccine for Typhoid Fever
It is recommended for those who travel in unsanitary areas where careless disposal of feces and urine contaminates food, milk and water supplies to have a typhoid vaccine or immunization.
Oral typhoid vaccine and a single-doze injectable vaccine are available. The oral vaccine is a four capsule to be taken every other day. These capsules must be kept refrigerated and each capsule is taken with a cool liquid one hour before meal. The oral typhoid vaccine must be completed one week before travel. Oral vaccine is only be given to children over six years of age. This vaccine contains a live but weakened strain of the Salmonella bacteria that causes typhoid fever. It can be given as first-time dose or a booster dose. Oral vaccine last for about five years.
The injectable vaccine for typhoid fever is given as single injection. It is given at least two weeks before travel. It contains capsular polysaccharide antigen. It stimulates the body to make antibodies against typhoid bacteria. This vaccine is can be used in children for two years old and above.
Some side effects for typhoid vaccines are mild local soreness and redness after the injection for a few days. Fever may occur for some people. For oral vaccine, the most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, fever and headache.
A combined vaccine against for both typhoid and hepatitis A is also available. It is recommended to have protection against both illnesses.
