Symptoms of Typhoid Fever
Typhoid fever or enteric fever is an acute and highly communicable disease caused by an organism Salmonella typhosa. Typhoid fever is common in tropical areas where careless disposal of feces and urine contaminates food, milk, and water supplies.
The typhoid bacilli do their damage to the mucosa of the small intestines. They enter via the oral cavity and stomach and finally reach the lymph nodes and blood vessels in the small bowel.
Common Symptoms of Typhoid Fever
- Fever sustained 39OC to 40OC
- Feel weak
- Headache, nausea or vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Abdominal pain with tenderness, greenish diarrhea (or constipation)
- Bloody stools
- Mental confusion
- Some have rash of flat or rose colored spot
Typhoid victims die within 21 days of the onset of the disease if untreated. The cause of death may be perforation of the small bowel, abdominal hemorrhage, toxemia, or other complications such as intestinal inflammation and pneumonia.
