Symptoms and Signs of Menopause

Menopause is defined as the cessation of menstruation and the end of a woman’s capacity to bear children, normally occurring between 40-50 years of age. The periods between, during and after menopause are called pre-menopausal, menopausal, and post-menopausal. Premenopausal symptoms include skipped menstrual periods and scanty or lessened menstrual flow. During the menopausal period, menstruation ceases, and there are sometimes various systemic disturbances. The postmenipausal period is characterized by the return of bodily equilibrium and a renewed feeling of good health.

Physical symptoms of menopause are caused by an estrogen deficiency that upsets the hypothalamic control of the autonomic nervous system. Some physical symptoms are hot flashes and chills, nervousness, insomnia, heart palpitation, dizzy spells, or increased or diminished appetite. But not all women suffer from these symptoms; the most common symptoms among women are sudden hot flashes and dizziness.

Aside from physical symptoms, women are also suffered from emotional symptoms including the feeling that she lost her beauty, sex appeal, or sexual desire, a fear of cancer, worry of becoming old, or a feeling that menopause means that she has lost youthful energy and spirit and is becoming old although there is no medical basis for believing that menopause affects sex life or appearance.

With the aid of understanding and caring of husband, friends and family, a woman can able to cope any menopause difficulties. A husband can pamper and show his appreciation to his wife by taking her out more often and show his interest by remembering anniversaries and birthdays. However, if a woman experiences any unusual symptoms such as abnormal vaginal discharge, spotting between periods, too frequent periods, periods that last too long or unusual irritation of the genitals; she should consult to her physician.
