Causes of Frequent Urination among Children

One of the parent’s concerns is the frequent urination of their children.  Frequent urination can be a sign of child’s urine abnormality. Let’s find our some common causes of frequent urination:

  • Urinary tract infection. It is the infection of kidney, ureter, bladder or urethra in a child caused by bacteria. Other symptoms include fever, flank or abdominal or back pain, nausea, vomiting, cloudy or bad odor urine, painful or frequent urination.  Urinalysis is required in order to evaluate for infection.  It is encouraged to drink plenty of water to prevent urinary tract infection (UTI).
  • Diabetes Mellitus. The cause of diabetes mellitus is lack of hormone insulin which is necessary for the body to use glucose used for fuel and energy. It is also called sugar diabetes.  If there is lack of insulin, sugar levels builds up in the blood of a child with diabetes. Some symptoms include frequent urination or pollikiuria, drinking more fluids than usual or polydipsia, eating more than usual or polyphagia and weight loss.
  • Diabetes Insipidus.  It is called water diabetes. It is a disorder in which there is a abnormal increase in urine output, fluid intake and thirst. Both diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus has the same symptoms such as frequent urination and thirst.
  • Pollakiuria. It is a frequent daytime urination, 10 to 30 times a day usually with very small amounts of urine produced each time.  Pollakiuria is often linked to stress.
  • Vulvovaginitis.  It is the irritation of the skin in and around vaginal area or at the opening of the urethra which symptoms is similar to UTI.
  • Kidney or bladder stone. It is a mass of hard materials such as crystallized salt, that may collect within the kidney and obstruct the flow of urine.
