Congenital Heart Disease
After 20 years of battling heart disease, my husband’s nephew passed away yesterday. His nephew was born with heart defects. CHD or congenital heart defect is a heart problem which is present at birth that caused by improper development of the heart during fetal development. There is no known reason for the heart to form improperly. The cause of congenital heart disease often associated to an irregularity of an infant’s chromosomes, single gene defects or environmental factors. There are many factors involved to congenital heart disease both genetic and environmental. Other potential causes include certain medications taken during pregnancy, maternal viral infection, and maternal diabetes mellitus.
Sometimes it is hard to detect a minor heart defects since doctor may not detect it during physical exam. Some symptoms of congenital heart disease usually in newborn babies include rapid breathing, poor blood circulation, fatigue and bluish tint to the skin while for older children includes shortness of breath, fatigue, and increase blood and fluids in lungs.
