During Christmas season, a number of heart attacks are greatly increased. Deaths during the month of December and January rise due to heart attacks. Possible reason of heart attack during holidays is the busy schedule such as shopping, traveling and partying, many people delays the doctor’s appointment and forget their medication. Aside from that, holidays are the perfect day to take a break from diet and exercise.
Some explanation of heart attack during holiday is a high consumption of alcohol and change of diet. Parties are everywhere during Christmas, so many people drink more alcohol than usual and eat more calories and fats. Holidays often accompany with stress and depression which also increases the risk of heart attack.
Other reason is emotional or family stress during Christmas and New Year.
Some Tips to Avoid Heart Attacks during Holiday
- Before going to party or gathering, have snack of high in protein about an hour before you leave to control your appetite.
- Avoiding high fat condiments such as mayonnaise, sauces, cheese and dressing and limit fried foods in fast food during shopping instead order a salad or burger with fat-free dressing.
- Serve large portion of fruits and vegetables as the main dish and a small portion of meat as side dish during parties.
- Bring your medicine during parties, travels, or shopping to remember to take your medicine.
- Limit your drinking alcohol. You can say “no thanks” during parties. Drink non-alcoholic beverages.
- Prepare a healthier holiday meal such as low-fat or nonfat dairy products, low fat meals, fish, skinless poultry and more fruits, vegetables, and whole grain cereals.
- Stay away from buffet table to avoid overeating.
- Continue to exercise during Christmas and New Year.
- Interrupt your holiday activities if you experience heart attack symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty in breathing, nausea, and excessive sweating.
- Choose a low fat calories meal and salty food at the parties or gathering to prevent obesity and high blood pressure.
