Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection Causes
When there is a recurrent or repeated urinary tract infection, we must figure out the reason why it is repeated especially if the duration is short. Recurrent urinary tract infection is at least having at least 2 infections within 6 months or 3 infections for 1 year. Recurrent urinary tract infection can be alarming because it cause several reasons. I listed some possible causes of recurrent UTI.
- Reflux problem. Some children have underlying abnormality in such a way that some urine goes back up into the ureters and possibly up to the kidneys This is called vesicoureteral reflux problem Reflux expose the kidney to infection so it is important to provide necessary treatment.
- Improper wiping from front to back. We must teach our children the proper way of wiping such as to wipe from front to back to avoid the spreading of bacteria from the anus toward the urethra after using the toilet.
- Constipation. When children is constipated, the stool in the colon is pressed against the bladder which cause the bladder not to empty completely and the urine remains in the bladder becomes a breeding ground for bacteria.
- Holding the urine. Some children are busy that they cannot want to interrupt their activities which resulted in holding the urine. The longer urine is held in, the more likely it is for bacteria to make it up to the bladder and for the bacteria to multiply. Children should be taught to go to the bathroom as soon as he feels the urge to urinate.
- Irritate urethra. When the bladder is irritated, it is make easier for the bacteria to infect the urethra. Causes of irritate urethra are tight diapers and clothing, kid sitting in a wet and soiled diaper for long period of time as well as bubble baths.
- Kidney stone or bladder stone. Kidney stone or bladder stone may blocked the flow the urine that can cause UTI.
Of course, we must know the reason for recurrent urinary tract infection in order to have a right treatment. Urinalysis and some other test are performed for the detection of UTI. Sometimes urine culture is recommended in order to detect the type of bacteria.
