Kidney or Bladder Stone
Kidney stone or bladder stone is developed when there is lack of fluids intake because the group of minerals or other materials from a small stone in the kidney, ureter, or bladder. Kidney stone is also called “renal calculi”. The stone can cause pain, block the flow of urine and cause a long term kidney problems if it is not treated rapidly. These stones seldom cause problems while they are forming but movement of the stones irritates the urinary tract and can cause severe pain; the irritation of the tissues may cause bleeding that will ultimately show up in the urine.
There are several types of kidney stones namely; calcium stones, uric acid stones, struvite stones and cystine stone. Calcium stones are formed when there is too much calcium in the urine while uric stones occur when there is too much uric acid in the urine caused by dehydration or illnesses. Struvite stones develop as a result of an interaction between protein breakdown products and infection caused by bacteria in the urine and finally cystine stone is a genetic disease called cystinuria.
Common symptoms of kidney or bladder stone are back pain usually just under the ribs or side pain, blood in urine, nausea and vomiting, fever and chills, frequent and painful urination. If these symptoms present, it is necessary to ruled out the cause. Early treatment is needed to avoid kidney damage.
Diagnosis of kidney or bladder stones is urinalysis and urine culture, x-ray of the abdomen, kidney ultrasound, CT scan, and intravenous urography.
