A healthy lifestyle: Eat more Fruits and Vegetables

GrapesFast food business is growing now a day. There are many people who become addicted to fast food. Why not, try to eat fruits as your snack and see the difference. Instead of potato chips, try to replace it with raw vegetable or add fruit to your breakfast, drinks real juice in replace with usual coffee.

Some people are finding it difficult to include fruits and vegetables in their budget. They reasoned that fruits are too expensive. But I don’t believe it because when I compare the price of fruits and fast food snack or cookies and soft drinks, it almost the same amount. Like for example, one piece of a medium size apple cost fifteen pesos (P20.00) while soft drinks and 5 pieces of cookies (P35.00), one snack meal in popular fast food cost one hundred pesos (P100.00) and half kilo of grapes cost also one hundred pesos (P100.00). I’m not saying to stop eating on fast food and be vegetarian but make sure to balance your eating habits. Consider the benefits of your body from eating fruits and vegetables including prevention from hypertension, chronic disease, heart disease, and cancer, reduce the risk of stroke, strengthen immune system, good for circulatory system, reduce the radical damage, etc.

Fruits and vegetables of different colors contain valuable nutrients.

  • Green vegetables such as broccoli, lettuce, and cabbage are contains B-complex and vitamins that help the circulatory system
  • Orange/ yellow fruits and vegetables such as squash, sweet potatoes, and carrots help to prevent cancer by repairing DNA. Squash are good for eyesight. Foods like orange, peach, pineapple and papaya have high antioxidants and vitamin C. It helps to prevent heart disease and improve circulation.
  • White and green such as garlic, onion, and celery rich have variety of phytochemicals.
  • Red, blue and purple veggies and fruits such as apple, tomatoes, water melon, strawberry, grapes, etc. rich in antioxidants to protect heart disease and reduce radical damage.

A recommended serving is 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day according to U.S. Government’s Dietary. Those who are consuming more amounts of fruits and vegetables are more likely to reduce the incidence of heart disease, prostate cancer, pancreatic, bladder, and ovarian cancer.

One way to increase the intake of fruits and vegetables is to make it visible in your eyes. Place fruits and vegetable where you can see it. Place your fruits and vegetables in front of fridge, or on the counter or top of dining table. That way, you and other member of your family will likely to eat it.

So, decrease your intake of junk food and increase your intake of real foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables.
